Fabian Emura Perlaza, MD
For the past 18 years, Dr. Emura has been actively engaged in gastrointestinal cancer research and education, with a particular emphasis on endoscopic diagnosis and treatment of early tumors, as well as image-enhanced endoscopy. He has taught over 260 gastroenterologists worldwide in advanced endoscopic techniques and pioneered minimally invasive therapies (ESD and 3rd space endoscopy) for the treatment of esophageal, gastric and colorectal cancer in Latin America. Dr Emura also patented and pioneered the global clinical application and instruction of systematic alphanumeric code endoscopy (SACE) for early diagnosis of esophageal and gastric cancer, as well as the development of a widely used colon polyps categorization using NBI technology (the Sano-Emura Classification). Since 2006, he established and financed an annual stomach cancer screening program in Colombia, from which more than 2200 people from poor socioeconomic classes have benefited. Dr Emura has developed novel endoscopic techniques for the treatment of cancer patients, mainly to those with Barrett's neoplasia, rectal cancer and colonic laterally spreading tumors.
